CAPTAIN - Portland

Captain experience and resume necessary. Pre-employment drug screen and enrolled in random D.O.T. drug testing schedule required. Flexible schedule for day, early mornings, evenings, late nights, weekends and holidays.


  • -Complete Portland Spirit Deckhand, Senior Deckhand and Engineering training
  • -Knowledgeable of all boats engines and other mechanical equipment.
  • -Know the state of repair and readiness of your vessel.
  • -Manage the operations staff on duty and operate Portland Spirit vessels in a manner that insures compliance with USCG regulations, federal law and the standards, policies and procedures set forth by Portland Spirit and Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler.
  • -Insure a positive and professional image of the operations department to the other departments, passengers and general public through performance, attitude and appearance.
  • -Possess an in depth knowledge of the lower Willamette and lower Columbia rivers.
  • -Deliver safety announcements (and narration when applicable) over public address system.
  • -Work closely with Cruise Manager and Chef to create a safe and pleasant working environment, cooperation between departments and compliance with all company policies and procedures as well as the highest quality presentation possible to our guests and the general public.
  • -Identify safety and maintenance projects and determine practicality of delegating repairs to operations staff on duty or filing a repair order. Schedule contract labor as needed to maintain cruise schedule.
  • -Train and educate Deck, Sr. Deck and Engineers in the rules of the road, navigation, chart work and the practices of good seamanship. Encourage advancement within the company and acquisition of M.M.D’s.
  • -Train operations crew in public relations, including, but not limited to, dealing with intoxicated persons and assisting children and physically challenged people.
  • -Present status reports and recommendations to the operations manager regarding promotion, demotion and termination of operations personnel.
  • -Enforce disciplinary action within the guidelines of the department and the company.
  • - Authorize and arrange voyage repairs to ensure that your vessel does not miss a scheduled cruise.

Skills and Requirements:

  • 100 ton Master License Certification
  • Excellent public relations skills required
  • TWIC certification or obtainment of certification required upon hire.

  • Pay range: $15.00 per hour plus Gratuity

LEAD COOK - Portland

Will be directly responsible for daily food service operations. Position will be responsible for managing, supervising, and training of all on-board galley personnel. Position will ensure a high level of food quality, while helping to maintain budget figures for labor and food cost. The main focus will be to ensure that the guests perceive a high value of food service and true customer satisfaction.


  • -Protects the integrity of the executive chefs reputation.
  • -Leads by example; follows all Company quality standards for food preparation, storage and rotation, line cooking procedures, and all safe work practices.
  • -Responsible for maintaining and controlling the overall quality, consistency, preparation, and presentation of all assigned products.
  • -Oversee and assist in the development of menus and the preparation of food.
  • -Communicates with the executive chef, chef, or sales department as to cruise schedule and details to organize the meal service for each function.
  • -Works closely with executive chef, chef, and cruise manager to ensure quality events and services.
  • -Assist with purchasing, receiving, and inventory of galley food and supplies.
  • -Perform side work, set-up, and close-down procedures in compliance with federal, sate, and local law as well as company specifications.
  • -Assist in the supervision on the kitchen.
  • -Assist with the training of all galley personnel.
  • Skills and Requirements:

    • Three years experience in lead or supervisory position in restaurant kitchen environment.
    • Food Handlers card required upon hire.
    • Basic computer skills Ability to work in fast paced environment and work as a team player.
    • Ability to do repeated bending and lifting.
    • Ability to be on your feet for extended periods of time.

    • Pay range: $10-$12 per hour plus Gratuity - DOE
